West Homewood “Village” public information meeting, March 14, 2013

The West Homewood Plan made its second public appearance at the Senior Center on Thursday, March 14, 2013

Here are a few pictures of the West Homewood Village plan, as visualized by the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham. RPC and Homewood city staff were on hand for several hours this afternoon at the Homewood Senior Center as visitors came to look at renderings of building and business improvements possible with the adoption of a “form-based code” to replace current use-based zoning regulations. In general, the new code (existing businesses would be grandfathered) would provide a few building prototypes to developers that would create a more pleasing, uniform and pedestrian-friendly look and function to commercial buildings and areas.  The transformation would likely take place over 20 years or more as buildings changed ownership or use. Renderings placed on easels allowed residents to look at plans for two West Homewood commercial areas, one adjoining Patriot Park (the target development area) and the other between Wildwood and Shades Crest Road.  Click on images for a larger view.  The presentation included aerial views, maps, and before-and-after makeovers of spots such as the corner of Oxmoor and Oak Grove, and Raleigh Avenue and Oak Grove (called Jericho Crossings.  Who knew?).
